Alpha Psi Zeta Chapter, Los Angeles California

History of Alpha Psi Zeta Chapter Los Angeles

History of
Alpha Psi Zeta Chapter Los Angeles

The first chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated in Los Angeles was organized in 1937. Its name was Xi Alpha. Together ten women began to put Zeta on the map in Los Angeles by implementing and promoting the ideas of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Community Service. Due to this continued growth a graduate chapter was chartered in Los Angeles, Beta Eta Zeta.
Soon, a second graduate chapter, Gamma Sigma Zeta was chartered. The graduate chapters tried to work cooperatively and independently but soon realized the many benefits of working in unison. Then in 1955, in the home of Soror Marjorie Ellis, Sorors of Gamma Sigma Zeta voted to merge both chapters into one chapter, later to be chartered Alpha Psi Zeta. In the past 62 years, Alpha Psi Zeta Chapter has continued to grow and lead the way in Service, Scholarship, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood.

Triumphant Soror Marjorie Ellis
The Sorors of Alpha Psi Zeta will forever be grateful to Soror Ellis who in 1955 opened her home as a meeting site for the two graduate chapters to merge and
become Alpha Psi Zeta Chapter.

Finer Women Don't Haze

Since 1990 following the Greek Summit II held in St. Louis, Missouri, Zeta Phi Beta has taken a stance against hazing in any form or fashion and adopted the recommendations for Membership Intake put forth by that body. These recommendations called for policies to address the issue of hazing for individuals seeking membership into the respective Greek-letter organizations.

Since 1990, the policies and stance of the sorority have continued to evolve to reflect the changes in state laws, changes in policies/procedures on college/university campuses, and changes within the sorority. However, the message remains the same, “there shall be no “pledging”, “re-pledging” nor “post pledging” process in any of the constituent organizations comprising the National Pan-Hellenic Council Organization.”
